A new line of live tools for turret-lathe applications overcome the duty-cycle limitations of standard tools. Unlike existing tools that are restricted to limited run time due to frictional heating of the bearings and seals, the Planet Live Tool (PLT) uses a patent-pending bearing lubrication and cooling system. The PLT has no restrictions on cycle time or duty cycle, allowing near-continuous machine cycles on turret lathes and a reduction in the number of tools. Jobs that once had to be run on a multispindle machine can now be done on a turret lathe.
Also, the design of the ITI/Sauter Live Tool Spindle Units enhances these turret attributes with standard features such as precision alignment surfaces on the housings for rapid set-ups and changeovers, high precision bevel gear drives to reduce heat, noise and vibration as well as pre-stressed spindle bearings for high speed and high torque cutting operations.
Many of the tool spindles have a universal drive shaft construction for right- and left-hand use, plus they are designed for internal coolant up to 1,100 psi to help keep the tools cool and rapidly clear chips from the work zone.
